We are pleased to announce that the Search and Rescue (SnR) project, coordinated by the Decision Support Systems Laboratory and Dr Christos Ntanos, has been recognised by the European Commission as an EU Research and Innovation Success Story. This recognition highlights the significant impact of our work in enhancing disaster response capabilities across Europe.

The Search and Rescue project aimed to develop a highly interoperable, modular open architecture platform to support first responders during disaster situations such as earthquakes, industrial accidents, and building collapses. By integrating advanced technologies and fostering collaboration among emergency teams, the project has improved the effectiveness and efficiency of search and rescue operations.
Smart tech, sensors, and robots boost disaster response
Search and Rescue designed and implemented innovative tools and technologies. These include smart uniforms with embedded sensors to monitor the health and safety of responders, advanced communication platforms for better coordination, and autonomous robots equipped to detect hazardous substances. Through these contributions, we have advanced the state of disaster management technology and facilitated better resource sharing among first responders.
The project's success was demonstrated through seven large-scale pilot exercises conducted across Europe, involving over 700 participants. These exercises validated the effectiveness of the developed technologies and showcased their potential for seamless integration into existing disaster management systems.
We are proud of our team's dedication and the collaborative efforts of all consortium partners, which have led to tangible advancements in disaster response. This recognition by the European Commission underscores the importance of our work and motivates us to continue contributing to the resilience and safety of communities across Europe.
