Buildings are one of the biggest contributors to waste and carbon emissions in Europe — yet most of them are still designed as if they'll never need to change. Le' Colaz, a Horizon Europe project, is built on a different premise: what if buildings could adapt, just like the people who live in them?
The Idea
Inspired by the logic of LEGO bricks, Le' Colaz develops modular building components — facades, walls, floors — that can be assembled, reconfigured, and reused rather than demolished and replaced. The materials are bio-based and recycled. The components are smart, embedded with sensors that track how they perform over time. And the whole system is connected to an AI-powered decision engine that helps buildings respond to changing needs, climates, and regulations.
The project is running pilots in two Living Labs (Athens, Greece and Trondheim, Finland) two cities with very different climates and building cultures, testing how the same modular logic can work across contexts. Twelve partners from across Europe are involved, from materials researchers to AI developers to construction firms.
ICCS's Role: Keeping It All Connected
Every smart component in Le' Colaz generates data. Every AI recommendation, every sensor reading, every material passport — it all needs somewhere to live, and someone to make sure it's trustworthy, accessible, and secure.
That's where ICCS comes in. Our team leads the development of the project's central data infrastructure: the layer that connects the physical and digital sides of Le' Colaz and makes the whole system work as one.
We're building the platform that aggregates data from sensors, simulations, and AI models; makes it queryable in real time; and presents it through dashboards and alerts that different stakeholders can actually use — whether you're an engineer on site or a policymaker reviewing sustainability targets. Privacy, security, and EU data regulation compliance are built in from the ground up.
Even if not the most visible part of the project it’s the part that makes everything else meaningful.
