Project summary:

The overarching vision is to operationalize the Energy Efficiency First principle in the practical context of buildings, contributing to the decarbonization of the EU building stock. This will be achieved through the integration of electrified low-carbon technologies, such as heat pumps, to electrify the thermal energy demand of buildings. Additionally, the incorporation of Renewable Energy Sources and energy storage systems, alongside the digitalization and intelligence of buildings through smart energy management systems, will play a pivotal role.

To realize the META BUILD vision for the building sector, we will develop and demonstrate highly cost-effective, integrated, and replicable solutions (including heat pumps, coupled with RES and energy storage systems) at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 6-8. These solutions will electrify the thermal energy demand in buildings, driving forward the sector's decarbonization. Key to success will be ensuring social acceptance, along with rigorous adherence to energy efficiency measures, to promote sustainable and affordable energy use pathways for decarbonizing building-sector heating.

Taking a holistic approach, META BUILD will address challenges across the entire building lifecycle, encompassing product manufacturing, energy solution design and engineering, construction, renovation, operation, and maintenance.

Project objectives:

META BUILD will deliver:

  • A KPI-driven assessment methodology and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis for building electrification.
  • A "Decarbonisation as a Service" decision support tool.
  • Scalable business models that integrate energy efficiency and electrification.
  • Advanced heat pump technologies, Photovoltaic-Thermal (PVT) systems, and other RES solutions, as well as thermal and second-life battery storage systems.
  • An interoperable framework for electrified-ready buildings.
  • Energy management services for real-time monitoring and performance analytics.
  • Demand response, grid interaction, and flexibility planning tools.
  • Proactive maintenance and control services.
  • Digital Twins for optimizing and enhancing building performance.
  • Blueprints and policy recommendations for replication and scalability.

Role of ICCS:

ICCS (participating through the Decision Support Systems Lab) will be the project coordinator and it will contribute as follows:

  • WP1 - “Project management” (WP leader)
  • Task 2.5 - “Decarbonisation as a service: Tool for optimised design of integrated heating & cooling technologies” (task leader)
  • Task 4.2 - “Value-added services co-design & modelling framework for data-driven services” (task leader)
  • Task 7.4 – “Capacity Building Programme for reskilling and upskilling” (task leader)
