Full Title: Innovative Personalised Apps to Motivate and Support Behavioural Energy Efficiency
Start Date: 09/03/2020, Duration: 36 months
Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI), General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT)
The goal of ATOM is to generate, develop and validate user-centred applications which will empower energy end-users to engage in achieving energy efficiency through behavioural change. Innovative user-friendly applications will be developed, to convert big data from smart meters, sensors and appliances into value for the buildings’ occupants, through actionable personalised information, recommendations and incentives. The ‘Energy Αpps’ will simplify the complexity of the information gathered by building management systems, and put it on the hands of energy end-users, in context. ATOM will introduce a virtual energy currency approach to incentivize behavioural energy efficiency. This innovative component of a distributed economy will enable consumers to realise the value of their investment in renewable energy (prosumers) and/or energy efficiency allowing them to monetise their excess energy. The ‘Model for Behavioural Energy Efficiency’ will be specified and will consider different groups of variables, such as energy-related behaviour and attitudes, building characteristics, sociodemographic and personality variables, energy prices and feedback about thermal comfort. The ‘Connectivity Framework’ aims to incorporate open standards to achieve a new level of interoperability, interconnecting numerous devices and applying energy-efficient communication protocols. The available datasets will be coupled with a set of visualisation, querying and exploration tools, as well as suitable APIs for data exchange. These, along with a suite of configurable and ready-to-use analytical components that implement a series of advanced machine learning algorithms will drive the creation of innovative applications. The ‘Management App’ intends to be a useful tool for utilities, energy companies, ESCOs and local authorities to facilitate the configuration of the apps, as well as for designated third parties (researchers, students, ICT developers) to extend the functionalities of the apps or connect them to third-party solutions. The effectiveness of this novel suite of apps will be verified through an Agent-based Modelling approach and real-life applications.
