Nikas Alexandros, Dr

Electrical & Computer Engineer, MSc, PhD
Integrated assessment modelling, climate policy

Dr. Alexandros Nikas is a Senior Researcher at the Energy Policy Unit of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He holds a M.Eng. in electrical & computer engineering, an MSc in techno-economic systems, and a PhD in climate change policy support through integrative approaches, based on stakeholder involvement, operational research, and climate-economy modelling, all from the School of Electrical & Computer Engineering, NTUA.

Alexandros has longstanding experience in developing and utilising systems for supporting decision making, with a focus on climate and energy policy and in the light of deep uncertainty and (implementation/consequential, physical/transition) risks. Such systems include energy-economic and integrated assessment models (IAMs), multi-criteria group decision analysis, systems of innovation frameworks, fuzzy cognitive mapping, and portfolio theory. He also has experience in carrying out stakeholder engagement and co-creation activities with a view to maximising societal ownership and policy relevance; as well as in climate-economy and energy-system modelling frameworks for climate change mitigation policy evaluation and for strategies towards circularity performance and broader sustainability.

Finally, Alexandros has worked on, managed, and scientifically coordinated European (Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe) as well as national co-funded projects in the fields of energy policy and climate action and has more than 80 scientific publications in high-impact international journals and books, as well as dozens of announcements in national and international conferences.

Alexandros is the Scientific Coordinator of the Horizon Europe research and innovation projects IAM COMPACT, DIAMOND, and TRANSIENCE, as well as Senior Researcher in Horizon Europe projects DEFINITE-CCRI, EU-CHINA-BRIDGE, THESEUS, ACCLIMATE, and ENTICE, and the LIFE 2021-2027 JUSTEM project. Previously, he managed the H2020 PARIS REINFORCE project.
