NTUA’s Decision Support Systems Laboratory Joins the European D-NAVIO Project to combat large vessel hazards through Digital Twins.
On 12 and 13 June 2025 the Horizon Europe project D-NAVIO held its official kick-off meeting in Athens, marking the start of a three-year journey towards safer and smarter maritime transport and operations. Coordinated by the Decision Support Systems Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and our own Dr Christos Ntanos, the event gathered experts from 16 partner organisations across seven EU countries.
D-NAVIO focuses on improving ship safety and operational resilience through advanced digital technology. At its core lies the development of an Intelligent Digital Twin (IDT), a sophisticated digital replica that mirrors ship systems in real-time, predicting risks and supporting proactive decision-making. Key technologies integrated into this digital twin include:
XDTLib, an extensible library for creating and managing digital twins of maritime systems.
HYDRA, an innovative framework for adaptive, real-time risk assessment.
DYNAMO, an engine that dynamically integrates multiple digital twins into a cohesive, operational representation of a vessel.
An Explainable AI (XAI) suite for transparent detection of operational anomalies.
A Cybersecurity Assessment Toolkit, alongside advanced Failures-Reporting Systems, enhancing vessel reliability and safety.
The consortium will evaluate these technologies aboard two large-scale pilot vessels: a passenger cruise ship and a large container vessel, providing invaluable real-world data for validation, refinement and optimal operational practices.
We warmly welcome all participants in Athens and look forward to impactful results that will enhance maritime safety through digital innovation.
Stay tuned for updates!
