EPU-NTUA is a proud member of the Webinos consortium, a large scale FP7 ICT Programme aiming to define and deliver an Open Source Platform and specific components, exploiting Future Internet technologies, that will enable applications and services to be used and shared consistently and securely over a broad spectrum of converged, connected multi-devices, including mobile, PC, home media (TV) or automotive taking also into consideration the important dimension of the users social context. Promoting a “single service for every device” vision, WAX will move the existing baseline from ad-hoc software to services, ensuring that the technologies for describing, negotiating and adapting to context are fit for purpose. Innovations in contextual description will be broad covering device capability, network access, user identity and preferences, location, behaviourally induced properties and finally the more complex issue of the users’ social network context.
EPU-NTUA is involved in webinos in order to advance its research into pervasive computing and more particularly context awareness in a real multi-platform environment. The contributions of EPU-NTUA broaden the research activities relating to software and systems' interoperability, as well as social networking technologies, into device and platform specific pervasive computing functionality. The involvement of the unit in webinos will prove useful in raising the research standards as well as attracting the best students that are interested in these fields for PhDs, Post-Grad Projects as well as Final Year Projects. EPU-NTUA uses webinos results to contribute to international academic journals, conferences and workshops as well as provide material and incentives for PhD theses. Furthermore, EPU-NTUA has a long standing interest for research in Web 2.0 specifications, Internet of Things and Social Media, areas in which the work done in webinos contributes greatly.
The scenarios and use-cases developed by EPU-NTUA for webinos, especially in the area of Context Awareness are being used for creating Final Year Projects for students interested in areas such as Context Awareness, Web 2.0 and the Internet of Things. Moreover, EPU-NTUA contributes this knowledge to related projects. Specifically, the Greek Interoperability Centre. The main goal of the project is to set up all the necessary infrastructure within the Decision Support System Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens, which will enable the Lab to act also as a new research centre targeting e-Government and e-Business Interoperability Research. This project is drawing from the data transformations and exchange in the webinos platform to take note of the standards applied, in order to propose similar solutions in relevant cases. The implementation of the Context Manager and Context API provides EPU-NTUA with a valuable testing platform for the innovations proposed.
The dissemination activities in which EPU-NTUA is involved are an integral part of the research performed on context-awareness. The articles and conference presentations, as well as other public events and contributions planed throughout the webinos project duration are important for the enhancement of the visibility of the unit, between its institutional peer and industry. The inclusion of the work contributed in new standards for web and native applications, as well as the potential to create new standards for pervasive computing also plays a very important part for the goals of EPU-NTUA.
