ENGAGE - An Infrastructure for Open, Linked Governmental Data Provision towards Research Communities and Citizens,
Ongoing, European Commission , Infrastructures – 2011 - 2 - combination of CP and CSA.
Visit the project site: www.engage-project.eu/engage/wp/
Information and Communication Technologies have an unprecedented potential to improve the responsiveness of governments to the needs of citizens and have long been recognized as a key strategic tool to enable reforms in the public sector. During the last years, this potential of ICT has started to be dealt with in a multi-disciplinary way, giving birth to new research communities dealing with governance and policy modelling, modelling and simulation of complex systems, public administration information systems, open governance and social media. However, this potential is to this day non-systematically exploited, as there are significant barriers that hinder the effective exploration, management and distribution of the vast amounts of available public sector data towards the research communities. The main goal of ENGAGE project is the deployment and use of an advanced service infrastructure, incorporating distributed and diverse public sector information resources as well as data curation, semantic annotation and visualisation tools, capable of supporting scientific collaboration and governance-related research from multi-disciplinary scientific communities, while also empowering the deployment of open governmental data towards citizens. Following on Open Data initiatives throughout Europe, ENGAGE has established links with numerous National and International public sector organisations, research communities, open data experts and standardisation fora. The project is supported by the Greek NREN and NGI node GRNET, providing the infrastructure for service provision.

OPENi - Open-source, web-based, framework for integrating applications with social media serivces and personal cloudlets,
Ongoing, European Commission.
Visit the project site: www.openi-ict.eu
OPENi will define and deliver an open-source web platform that will enable applications to access and use a broad spectrum of existing cloud-based functionality and content, consistently across different devices and platforms, in a way that enables a user-centric application experience. Targeting the needs of both application Developers and Users, OPENi will realize its vision for user-centric, cloud-connected applications by providing:
To Developers: a platform-independent technology framework to build applications that can seamlessly integrate publicly available cloud-based functionality and content.
To Users: the necessary cloud solutions to realize a novel application experience, by being able to keep their user generated content and data in the cloud and further make it available across different applications on different devices.
To enable this OPENi will realize a series of innovations in accessing and using cloud-based functionality, binding dynamically to publicly available cloud-based APIs, sourcing and rendering cloud-based content across different device types and underlying operating systems and establishing a framework for web security and authorization in accessing cloud-based resources.
OPENi will be a significant catalyzing factor, boosting EU software industry – which already counts a considerable number of highly skilled SME software firms to take further advantage of the thriving market of mobile applications, through a framework of open technologies that will be readily available and require almost no additional skill to take up..

Envisioning, Supporting and Promoting Future Internet Enterprise Systems Research through Scientific Collaboration,
Ongoing, European Commission, FP7.
Future Internet Enterprise Systems play an important role in the quest of European enterprises (typically SME's) to become more competitive, to enlarge their markets and overall potential while transforming towards new business models and developing innovative products and services. In this context, the ENSEMBLE project is a Coordination and Support Action (CSA), that combines systemic approaches, scientific multi-disciplinarity, innovative Web 2.0 collaboration tools with a community-driven mentality, to significantly increase the impact of the Future Internet Enterprise Systems (FInES) domain.ENSEMBLE aims at enlarging and supporting the FInES research community (research projects, key experts, wider audience) through establishing and maintaining specifically designed electronic collaborative tools and performing specialized workshops and consultations. Utilising the power of the community combined with key experts from neighbouring scientific domains, ENSEMBLE project also aims at a major contribution towards the establishment of a scientific base for Enterprise Interoperability - a grand challenge of the FInES research. Furthermore, ENSEMBLE activities will provide solid support for the ICT research roadmap development in the area of Future Internet, interacting with the research projects and key experts of the area, delivering policy support and research alignment recommendations. The roadmap and the various research objectives and evolving achievements will be presented as a self-standing report and as an online, dynamic, evolving knowledge base.

Citizens Collaboration and Co-Creation in Public Service Delivery (COCKPIT),
Completed, European Commission, FP7.
The fundamental idea of COCKPIT is that Web 2.0 social media constitute the emerging and de facto mass collaboration and cooperation platform between citizens themselves, and between citizens and public administrations. Therefore, Web 2.0 social media will have very soon established themselves as a very effective means for creating, sharing and tracking knowledge about citizens’ opinions and wishes on public service delivery. COCKPIT adopts a highly synergetic approach towards the definition of a new governance model for the next-generation public service delivery decision making process by combining the research areas of citizens’ opinion mining in the context of Web 2.0, Service Science Management and Engineering in the context of the public sector, and deliberative engagement of citizens for forming informed judgements on public services’ delivery. COCKPIT supports the notion of open Public Administrations with which citizens have higher confidence and trust among each other and with the Public Administration, resulting in better governance, lower disputes on services’ delivery priority setting, higher degrees of public service adoption, lower public service delivery costs, better service innovation, and citizens loyalty to the public services.

Policy Gadgets Mashing Underlying Group Knowledge in Web 2.0 Media (PADGETS),
Ongoing, European Commission, FP7.
The project aims at bringing together two well established domains, the mashup architectural approach of web 2.0 for creating web applications (gadgets) and the methodology of system dynamics in analyzing complex system behavior. The objective is to design, develop and deploy a prototype toolset that will allow policy makers to graphically create web applications that will be deployed in the environment of underlying knowledge in Web 2.0 media. For this reason, the project introduces the concept of Policy Gadget (Padget) – similarly to the approach of gadget applications in web 2.0 – to represent a micro web application that combines a policy message with underlying group knowledge in social media (in the form of content and user activities) and interacts with end users in popular locations (such as social networks, blogs, forums, news sites, etc) in order to get and convey their input to policy makers. Through the proposed platform any policy can become a reusable and communicable web application to be used in relation to underlying content and social activities over the web. Policy makers will be able to set up such applications on their own and use them to communicate their policies to the public. People can use these applications as they use everyday services and policy makers can track the results of this interaction back to their policy making process to assist them in reaching solid decisions that represent society’s input and aspirations.

Federated e-Participation Systems for Cross-Societal Deliberation on Environmental and Energy Issues, "FEED", Proposal No: EP-07-01-032
Completed, European Commission, Programme: e-participation
The main objective of FEED Pilot Project is to apply a new concept in e-Participation by allowing users to have seamless access to existing federated content that matches their needs for information on the several aspects of a debated issue as well as to informative material about the specificities of the deliberation procedure in the scope of which an issue is considered. This way the level of knowledge for FEED users is enhanced both around the essence of issue at hand as well as of the procedural aspects of the deliberation process. Through FEED, federated content is contextually annotated according to the debated issue and legislative process specifics allowing the platform users to perceive it as a coherent body of information to be used in the various stages of a deliberation procedure.
